Dual system: Approval issued for all 16 German states

Neckarsulm, September 14, 2020. PreZero Dual GmbH, a subsidiary of the Schwarz Group, will offer its own ‘Dual System’ in all 16 German states starting on January 1, 2021. PreZero Dual initially started in seven states with great success on January 1, 2020. Further system approvals under the German Directive on Packaging & Packaging Waste have been acquired over the past months; and the last outstanding one has now been issued by the relevant State Ministry in Schleswig-Holstein and was posted in the official gazette on August 24, 2020. The Schwarz Group, to which PreZero as well as the retail companies Kaufland and Lidl belong, assumed responsibility for its own waste and recyclable material early on. Thanks to its own dual system, the Schwarz Group is now taking a further significant step towards closed recycling loops within the entire Group. “Our declared goal is to put as many recyclables as possible back into circulation. We ensure this utilizing our own capacities along the entire waste and recycling management value chain through our own environmental services provider, PreZero. Taking responsibility for all our products is a central component of our sustainable vision. The launch of PreZero Dual was therefore the next logical step, because by means of our own dual system, we take responsibility for the packaging that we, as the Schwarz Group, put into circulation; and simultaneously, we are actively contributing to the promotion of recycling,” says Dietmar Böhm, the current Director of PreZero Dual. PreZero Dual is currently licensing retail packaging for Kaufland and Lidl as well as about 700 associated suppliers. This means that PreZero Dual currently has a total market share – in the seven states of Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland and Thuringia – of 10.6 percent lightweight packaging, 8.3 percent glass and 5.1 percent paper/paperboard/cardboard for the third quarter of 2020. PreZero Dual is pleased to be able to offer its services as a reliable partner to other licensees in Germany on a nationwide basis from 2021 onward. “Our aim is the professional management of recyclable materials that can then be put back into circulation to produce new products. By means of this overall concept and our stringent quality standards, we would like to satisfy our customers and thus establish PreZero Dual as one of the leading systems on the market in the long term,” says Alexander-Christian Root, who will join PreZero Dual’s management team.
